9H vs 10H Ceramic Coating: What the Hardness Rating Really Means

Scroll through any online shop and you’ll see it everywhere: “9H Nano Ceramic” for ₹399, “10H Graphene Ceramic” for ₹1,299, and somewhere a studio banner promising “12H diamond protection”. Bigger number, better coating, right? That’s exactly what the labels want you to think. However, the truth is less simple. When it comes to 9H vs 10H ceramic coating, the number on the bottle tells you far less than you’d expect, and sometimes nothing at all.

This guide explains where the “H” actually comes from, why the official scale stops at 9H, what brands really mean when they print 10H, and the handful of things that do decide whether a coating survives an Indian monsoon. Quick answer: “9H” comes from a pencil scratch test, and 9H is the top grade on the standard test scale (ASTM D3363). There is no official 10H grade in that test, so “10H” is a marketing label, usually for a brand’s premium or graphene-infused formula. A good 10H product may well be better than a cheap 9H one, but because of its chemistry, layers and application, not because it is “one step harder”. Overall, for most Indian car owners, a well-applied professional 9H coating (₹12,000–₹25,000) is the sensible choice.

The Short Answer: 9H vs 10H Ceramic Coating

If you read only one section, then make it this one. In short, here’s how the two labels compare once you take the marketing away:

  • 9H is a real test result. In other words, the cured coating wasn’t scratched by the hardest pencil in the standard test set. Almost every genuine ceramic coating on the market clears this bar, so it is the minimum, not a premium feature.
  • 10H is not a standard grade. The official pencil test (ASTM D3363) only runs from 6B to 9H. A “10H” claim can’t come from that test in the normal way, so treat it as a product name, not a measurement.
  • Hardness isn’t durability. How long a coating lasts depends on its solids content, the number of layers, the paint prep before it goes on, and how you wash the car. However, none of that shows up in the H number.
  • Neither makes a car scratch-proof. Also, both are 2–3 microns thin, about a twentieth of your factory clear coat. They resist light swirl marks. Still, they cannot stop stone chips or key scratches.

Where 9H and 10H Ceramic Coating Ratings Come From

The “H” rating comes from one of the oldest and simplest tests in the paint industry: the pencil hardness test, standardised as ASTM D3363 (and a close cousin, ISO 15184). It was built for factory and industrial paints, long before car ceramic coatings existed.

Here’s how it works. First, a technician takes a set of graded drawing pencils, sands each tip flat, and pushes it across the cured coating at a 45° angle.

In the ISO version, a small device holds the pencil under a fixed load of 750 grams so the pressure stays the same every time. They then start with the softest pencil and work upward. Finally, the hardest pencil that doesn’t gouge or scratch the surface becomes the rating.

The pencil scale, step by step

You probably used some of these grades in school, too. In fact, the standard set has 17 grades, from soft and smudgy to very hard:

9H pencil hardness is not “diamond hardness”

This is where most confusion starts. For example, people hear “9H” and think of the Mohs scale, the mineral hardness scale from school science where diamond is 10 and sapphire is 9. However, the two scales have nothing to do with each other. A 9H pencil is still just graphite and clay, and far softer than a grain of sand.

That matters on Indian roads. For instance, ordinary road dust contains quartz, which sits at 7 on the Mohs scale. Rub a dusty cloth across any “9H” car and the quartz will still win. That’s why a coated Creta parked in Delhi dust still needs a proper two-bucket wash, not a quick wipe with a duster.

So What Is a 10H Ceramic Coating, If the Scale Stops at 9H?

If the standard test stops at 9H, where does 10H come from? In fact, there are three common explanations, and it helps to know all of them:

  1. Non-standard pencils. Firstly, a few Japanese pencil makers do sell pencils marked 10H. As a result, a brand can scratch-test with one of these and print “10H”. But that’s outside the ASTM D3363 set, and pencil hardness varies from brand to brand, so the result can’t be compared fairly with anyone else’s “9H”.
  2. A different test altogether. Alternatively, some brands quote results from other methods, like a scratch machine or a nano-indentation test, and translate them into an “H” number. The numbers sound comparable but aren’t.
  3. Pure product naming. In practice, “10H” very often simply means “our premium tier”. Specifically, it’s usually a coating with more layers, a higher silica content, or added graphene. The “10H” is the badge, not a lab measurement.

None of this means a 10H product is bad. Indeed, many premium coatings sold as 10H are genuinely better formulas. Even so, the point is that the number isn’t what makes them better.

Now notice what’s missing from the 10H column: any jump in protection that matches the jump in price. Some competitor articles claim 10H coatings last 5–7 years simply because of the number. That isn’t how it works. Instead, lifespan comes from the product and the prep, which is what the next sections cover.

What a 9H or 10H Ceramic Coating Can (and Can’t) Do on Indian Roads

To begin with, a cured ceramic layer is roughly 2–3 microns thick. By contrast, your factory clear coat is about 40–50 microns. So the coating is a thin, hard, glassy skin, great at some jobs and useless at others.

What a quality coating (9H or 10H) genuinely helps with:

  • Swirl marks from washing, the fine cobweb scratches you see under petrol-pump lights.
  • Bird droppings and tree sap, which etch bare clear coat within hours in 40°C Rajasthan or Chennai heat.
  • Hard-water spots. The coating is hydrophobic (water-repelling), so water beads and rolls off instead of drying into mineral rings.
  • UV fading on reds and dark colours parked outdoors all day.
  • Easier washing. As a result, monsoon mud and highway grime rinse off with far less scrubbing.

What no coating can stop, whatever the H number:

  • Stone chips from trucks on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway or NH48.
  • Key scratches and deliberate vandalism.
  • Parking dings, scraped bumpers and tight-basement scuffs.
  • Deep scratches from branches or two-wheeler handlebars in city traffic.

What Actually Decides How Long a Coating Lasts

If the H rating isn’t the answer, what is? Ask any experienced detailer, though, and you’ll hear the same five things, roughly in this order of importance:

1. Paint preparation

This is the big one. That’s because a coating locks in whatever is underneath it, including swirls, water spots and old wax.

A proper job includes a decontamination wash, a clay bar treatment, paint correction (machine polishing to remove defects) and an alcohol wipe-down so the coating can bond. For example, on a three-year-old car that often adds ₹6,000–₹15,000 and a full day of work. It’s also why the same bottle lasts twice as long at a good studio as at a roadside shop.

2. Solids content and chemistry

Ceramic coatings are built on silicon dioxide (SiO₂), the same compound as glass. Professional coatings, therefore, carry a high concentration of it.

By contrast, cheap sprays may contain only a small percentage mixed into a sealant. Generally, a real product will tell you its solids content on the technical data sheet. On the other hand, a vague bottle that only shouts “10H” won’t.

3. Number of layers

A single layer wears through faster, especially on the bonnet and front bumper, which take the most dust. For this reason, premium packages usually build up two or three layers. This is one of the genuine differences between a ₹12,000 job and a ₹35,000 job, whatever H number is printed on either.

4. Curing conditions

Coatings need time and a clean, dry space to harden fully, usually 24 hours before the car gets wet and about 7 days before its first wash. As a result, a coating applied in an open, dusty workshop in humid Kochi or Mumbai starts life at a disadvantage. So ask whether the studio uses infrared curing lamps or a closed bay.

5. How you wash the car

Surprisingly, automatic brush washes and dirty dusters can cut a coating’s life roughly in half. A pH-neutral shampoo, the two-bucket method and a soft microfibre towel will do more for your coating’s lifespan than any hardness rating. Two quick rules of thumb. First, be wary of any quote under ₹5,000 that promises three to five years. After all, at that price nobody is spending a full day correcting your paint.

Second, the jump from a “9H” to a “10H” package should come with something concrete, like an extra layer, a longer written warranty or included paint correction. Otherwise, if the only difference is the number, you’re paying for a label.

7 Questions to Ask Before Paying for a 9H or 10H Ceramic Coating

Take this list to any studio. Generally, a good detailer will answer every question happily, and a vague answer tells you a lot.

  1. “Which exact product and brand is this?” Not “our 10H coating”. Instead, ask for the brand name you can look up.
  2. “How many layers, and on which panels?” Premium jobs often add an extra layer on the bonnet and bumper.
  3. “What paint correction is included?” One-step polish, two-step correction, or just a wash?
  4. “Can I see the technical data sheet?” It should list the solids content and cure times.
  5. “What does the warranty actually cover, and what voids it?” Many 3–5 year warranties need yearly paid inspections at the same studio.
  6. “Where and how will it cure?” Look for a closed, dust-free bay and ideally IR lamps.
  7. “What’s the aftercare routine?” A good studio gives you a written wash guide and recommends a topper spray.

Notice, however, that “Is it 9H or 10H?” isn’t on the list. That’s because once you’ve got honest answers to these seven, the H number barely matters.
